Environmental acceptable use of sewage sludge in soil remediation


At CVRV Piešťany a nursery of Arundo donax maternal plants for phytoremediation was founded in greenhouse conditions. Scientists optimalized the composition of cultivating medium for Arundo donax, prepared in vitro cultures of Arundo donax in 2 repetitions. 


The preparation of pot experiments for the study of sludge influence on plant growth has started. Scientists chose economically important plant species- barley, characterised selected barley varieties, optimalized the methods for preparation of soil with sludge, soil with defined calculated toxic metal content as well as the methods for the evaluation of selected morphological, physiological and yield parameters of plants.

At UCM Trnava experiments focused on characterization of Cd uptake, accumulation and toxicity in tissue of selected plants under laboratory as well as model contaminated soil solution conditions in the term of biochemical characterization of plants cultivated in soils containing high concentration of heavy metals were launched and realized.

The scientists of CVRV Piestany continued in taking care for maternal plants in a nursery of Arundo donax and in passaging of Arundo donax cultures. Scientists evaluated the multiplication experiment after 4 and 6 weeks. They transferred rooted shoots to soil to evaluate acclimatization ability of ex vitro Arundo donax plants. The second repetition of Arundo donax multiplication experiment was established. In the pot experiment, to study the influence of different amount of sludge on plant growth, the health and vegetation state of barley plants were evaluated and data were documented, processed and compared with control experiment. The scientists evaluated also symptoms of leaf spots on these barley plants.

Experiments utilizing positron emission tomography as a newly introduced effective tool for the study of dehydrated activated sludge influence on the growth of selected plant species have been realized at UCM Trnava.

Researchers from NYME discussed and finalized the system of the pot and field experiments, the methods of processing and evaluation of the data obtained from the experiments. The main activity was to find out the mixture recipes and the mixing ratio of the sewage sludge and other raw materials.

In RIPP pot experiment to study effect of sewage sludge supplement on growth parameters of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) was initiated. There were compared three variants of sewage sludge supplement to soil: control variant without sewage sludge and two doses, 5 and 15 t/ha. Growth parameters such as number of shoots, shoot height, shoot diameter were measured monthly and biomass production at the end of growth season.
